Sewer Repairs: The Underground Drama Nobody Wants
Nobody wants to hear the word “sewer”. But when your sewer line starts failing, you know about it fast. A bad smell through the drains. Toilets that gurgle for no reason. A garden patch that’s mysteriously lush. Sewer repairs are the kind of job that sneaks up on you, and by the time you notice something’s off, the damage is already well underway underground.
EKORP Plumbing handles sewer repairs across St George, Sutherland Shire, and Georges River every week. We’ve seen them all: collapsed pipes, root-choked lines, ancient clay mains crumbling under decades of pressure. And one thing’s always true: the sooner you call, the less it costs. We’re available 24/7 with a 60-minute response, $0 callout fee, and Licence 322223C. Ring us on 02 8667 5354 if you think you’ve got a problem.
What Really Causes Sewer Pipes to Fail
Sewer lines get ignored until they stop working. By then the damage has been building for months, sometimes years. Here’s what’s usually behind it.
1. Tree Root Invasion
- Sydney’s older suburbs are full of big, thirsty trees with root systems that travel a long way in search of water.
- A small crack in a sewer pipe is an open invitation. Roots work their way inside and keep growing until they block or split the pipe completely.
- This is one of the most common causes of repeated blockages in the same spot.
2. Pipe Age and Material
- A lot of homes in the area still run on old earthenware or clay sewer pipes that were laid decades ago.
- These materials crack, shift, and degrade over time. Some older PVC lines aren’t in great shape either.
- If your home was built before the 1990s, the sewer system is worth checking out.
3. Ground Movement
- Soil shifts over time. So does clay. So does anything buried under decades of rain, excavation, and load.
- When sewer pipes move out of alignment, they lose their slope. Waste stops flowing and starts pooling, which causes blockages and eventual collapse.
4. Flushing the Wrong Things
- Baby wipes, cooking grease, and hygiene products are constant offenders. They don’t break down and they build up fast in pipe bends.
- In a pipe that’s already compromised, even soft blockages can cause big problems.
5. Poor Original Installation
- We see it regularly: sewer lines laid without proper bedding, incorrect slope, or dodgy joins that were never going to last.
- These systems don’t just fail early. They fail badly, and fixing them requires more than a quick jet blast.
EKORP tip: If you’re dealing with blockages in the same spot over and over, that’s rarely bad luck. It usually points to a structural issue deeper in the main sewer line. Clearing the symptom won’t fix the cause.
Warning Signs You’ve Got a Serious Sewer Issue
Catch these early and you might avoid excavation altogether. Miss them and you’re looking at a much bigger job. Here’s what to watch for:
Multiple Drains Backing Up at Once
- When the toilet, shower, and laundry all stop draining at the same time, it’s not a coincidence. It points to a blockage in the main sewer line, not individual fixtures.
- Clearing each drain separately won’t help if the problem is further down the system.
Bad Smells Coming From Drains or Garden
- A persistent sewer smell near floor drains, basins, or out in the yard usually means there’s a crack or leak underground.
- If it’s bad enough to notice from the garden, there’s a real problem that needs looking at.
Patches of Extra Green Lawn or Sinkholes
- A slow sewer leak is brilliant fertiliser. That unusually green patch in your yard might be sitting right above a failing pipe.
- If the ground is also sinking or soft in spots, that’s a sign of soil erosion from a collapsed section.
Gurgling Sounds from Toilets or Drains
- Gurgling means trapped air, which usually points to a partial blockage or a pipe alignment issue that’s messing with the venting in your system.
Overflowing External Gully or Inspection Point
- Water or waste spilling from a gully trap or inspection opening is a red alert. The line is blocked and wastewater is backing up to the surface.
- Don’t ignore this one. Get on the phone and get someone out fast.
If any of those signs sound familiar, don’t sit on it. Waiting almost always means bigger excavation and more money. EKORP Plumbing uses CCTV inspection to confirm exactly what’s going on underground before anyone picks up a shovel.
How We Fix Sewer Problems Without Digging Up Your Yard
When people hear “sewer repair”, they picture backhoes tearing through the lawn. Fair enough, that used to be standard. But with modern trenchless methods, most jobs in Sydney’s south don’t need full excavation. Here’s how we approach it.
Step 1: CCTV Sewer Inspection
We feed a camera through the sewer line to locate the exact problem: cracks, root intrusion, misaligned joins, or collapsed sections. We get the precise location, the pipe condition, and what options are on the table. No guessing, no digging blind.
Step 2: High-Pressure Jet Blasting
Before repairs can start, the line needs to be cleared. High-pressure water jetting cuts through roots, built-up grease, and debris to restore flow and prep the pipe for whatever comes next.
Step 3: Trenchless Relining (If Suitable)
Where the pipe structure can support it, we reline without digging:
- A flexible epoxy resin liner goes into the pipe.
- A bladder inflates it, pressing it tight against the inner wall.
- It cures in place and forms a brand-new pipe inside the old one.
This works under driveways, garden beds, concrete slabs, and tree roots. It adds real longevity to the system and avoids tearing up the yard.
When Full Replacement Is Needed
Some pipes are too far gone for relining. If that’s the case, we’ll walk you through partial or full pipe replacement. We still aim to keep it as minimal as possible: keyhole excavation where we can, smart planning around the trench, and minimum disruption to the rest of the yard. Every job gets done to AS/NZS 3500 with full compliance paperwork.
Sewer Problems Don’t Fix Themselves: What to Do Now
A sewer issue isn’t like a slow-dripping tap you can put off for a week. Left alone, it gets worse. The pipe doesn’t heal, the roots don’t stop growing, and the blockage doesn’t clear on its own. Delays tend to mean:
- A full system backup inside the house
- Foundation or flooring damage from sewage sitting below slab level
- Health risks from raw sewage exposure
- Emergency excavation that proper diagnostics could have prevented
If You’ve Noticed:
- Slow drainage across multiple fixtures at the same time
- Bad smells from garden areas or floor drains
- Gurgling noises from the toilet or drains
- The same blockage recurring in the same spot
Don’t wait for a full collapse to make the call.
